Dental Care When You Have Diabetes

High blood sugar doesn’t just affect your energy levels—it also changes the environment in your mouth. Gum disease is more common and more severe in people with diabetes, and it can make blood sugar harder to control. The American Dental Association recommends that people with diabetes see a dentist every six months and mention their condition when scheduling. If you smoke, your risk for gum disease is even higher.

Simple habits matter. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss once daily. Dry mouth is a common side effect of some diabetes medications; sipping water and chewing sugar-free gum can help. If your gums bleed when you brush, don’t ignore it—schedule a dental visit. Treating gum disease can improve blood sugar control, so it’s a two-way street.

Dental insurance often covers cleanings and exams, but if you’re on Medicare, coverage varies. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits. If you’re uninsured, look for community health centers that offer sliding-scale fees. The key is not to skip regular checkups because of cost—prevention is cheaper than treating advanced gum disease.

Fruits and Diabetes: What’s Safe to Eat

Fruit can be part of a healthy diet for type 2 diabetes, but portion size and type matter. Berries—strawberries, blueberries, raspberries—are low in sugar and high in fiber, making them a smart choice. Apples and pears with the skin on provide fiber that slows sugar absorption. Bananas, grapes, and mangoes are higher in sugar, so keep portions small. A general rule: one serving of fruit is about 15 grams of carbohydrates, which is roughly a small apple or half a banana.

Pair fruit with protein or healthy fat to blunt blood sugar spikes. For example, have a few apple slices with peanut butter or a handful of berries with plain Greek yogurt. Avoid fruit juices and dried fruits, which concentrate sugar and lack fiber. Fresh, frozen, or canned fruit in its own juice (not syrup) are all good options. The American Diabetes Association recommends choosing whole fruits over processed forms.

Practical Tips for Fruit Choices

Check your blood sugar two hours after eating fruit to see how your body responds. Everyone is different—some people tolerate bananas well, while others spike. Use a glucose meter to test. If you’re on a budget, frozen berries are often cheaper and just as nutritious. And remember: fruit is not a free food. It counts toward your daily carbohydrate allowance.

VA Disability for Type 2 Diabetes

Veterans with type 2 diabetes may qualify for VA disability compensation if the condition is linked to their service. The VA rates diabetes under a specific schedule. If you manage with diet and exercise only, the rating is typically 10%. If you need oral medication or insulin, the rating can be 20% or higher, depending on factors like hospitalizations and complications. The rating for diabetes is often 20% for those who require insulin.

Agent Orange exposure is a recognized cause of type 2 diabetes for Vietnam veterans. If you served in Vietnam or other areas where Agent Orange was used, you may be eligible for benefits without proving a direct connection. The compensation amount varies based on your disability rating and dependents. For 2024, a 20% rating for a single veteran pays about $338 per month. You can file a claim online through the VA website or with help from a veterans service organization.

Don’t overlook other conditions that can be secondary to diabetes, such as neuropathy or kidney disease. These can increase your overall rating. If you’re already rated for diabetes, check whether your condition has worsened—you can request an increase. Keep thorough medical records and attend all VA exams.

Building a Daily Self-Care Routine

Managing type 2 diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. Start with small, consistent actions. Check your blood sugar as recommended by your doctor—often once or twice daily if you’re on insulin, less if you’re controlled with oral meds. Take medications at the same time each day. If you inject semaglutide, rotate injection sites in your stomach or thigh to avoid lumps. Learn how to inject semaglutide in the stomach properly: pinch the skin, insert at a 90-degree angle, and hold for a few seconds.

Physical activity helps insulin work better. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. A brisk walk after meals can lower blood sugar. If you have arthritis, low-impact activities like swimming or cycling are easier on the joints. Always carry a fast-acting sugar source in case of hypoglycemia, especially if you take insulin or sulfonylureas.

Finally, stay up to date with screenings. The A1C test shows your average blood sugar over three months; you should get it at least twice a year. Annual eye exams and foot checks are essential. And if you’re a veteran, explore VA resources for diabetes self-management classes, which are often free.
